Website Designer: How To Choose A Professional

By now most people trying to run a business should be aware of the importance of having a website. I don't think it's a secret anymore that the printed yellow pages have seen their day. Verizon, this year will not print their yellow pages anymore, and they have started to direct all their yellow page business to the Internet. Small and large business owners that have depended on the yellow pages for years are now forced to change how their customers will find them by means of the Internet. This can be a very frustrating process if you are not computer savvy. It's not enough today to be listed in a hand full of business directories, because people searching for products and service expect to land on a website to get their answers.

If the new or old business owner knows nothing about web design, then finding the right person to do the job will become overwhelming and sometimes frustrating. Lets first create a scenario that is very common with this process. For the remainder of this article we will call our business owner Joe, he is a plumber. Joe has come to realize that if he is going to remain in business, he has to join the digital age and now conduct business on the Internet.

Content Management System

One of the first big problems that Joe has, and he may not even be aware of this problem, is the fact that web design is an unregulated industry. How is this a problem for Joe? Anyone and their mother can call themselves a web designer. There are all types of software that helps people to easily put together a website without having any working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, the computer languages that is behind a web page. Since the release of Joomla and WordPress, content management systems, another web application software, more and more people entered the web design market. The above applications create sharp looking quality websites. But many don't understand that these applications were designed for blogging, they are basically a blogging website. These applications have limits, as they primarily work with templates, and in many cases are just not appropriate for many businesses. That's not saying that professional web designers do not build sites with Joomla and WordPress, they do, but they also know when it's appropriate to use this application.

So that presents another problem Joe might have. How will Joe know if he is dealing with a real professional or an armature that is misrepresenting them self as a professional? Joe needs to do his research and learn as much as he can about web design. A professional web designer offers many services with his or her business. Joe needs to ask questions, such as, what other services do you offer? Can you design a logo for my business? Can you design postcards, flyers, and brochures? Do you handle the printing of these materials? And here is a very important question, can you design my website to look good with a mobile device? Today's professional is on top of all the new technologies, and will be able to design that website to look professional in both the desk top monitor as well as the newest mobile device. People are searching the web with their cell phones, I-pods, and tablets, and the same search habits will apply. If the website is not pleasing to look at or easy to navigate, people will simply move on to the next website to look for their answers.

Some red flags to watch for when searching for a web designer. Any Designer that doesn't provide a portfolio should raise a red flag. The designer's portfolio only has images of the website home page he created, but can't be linked to the actual site. The designer may not be willing to provide you with reference. The designer's email contact information is an Internet email service such as Yahoo or Gmail and not a company name dot com email.

How to Select the Right Company for Website Optimization

There are a lot of changes going on in the world of search engine marketing and optimization. Google has released two momentous algorithm changes to its search engine, namely 'Panda' and 'Penguin,' which have both created quite an uproar in the website optimization industry. Additionally, the search giant has ditched Google Places for a more socially-oriented approach of using Google+ Local pages - another huge move for business and online marketers alike.

We're not even half way through 2012 and Google has SEO's and Internet marketers scratching their heads thinking "what's next?"

Content Management System

So if you're a business owner or marketer, you need to ensure that working with right website optimization company. The stir from 'Panda' and 'Penguin' has magnified the importance of using only ethical, best practices techniques of search engine optimization, and you need to ensure that the company you choose to help you get found in the search results knows exactly what to do and how to do it.

In this article, we are going to highlight a few major considerations you will want to keep in mind when selecting the right company for SEO and website optimization.

How Well Does Your Prospective SEO Provider Communicate?

Communication is key in any business relationship. This often underscores the importance of keeping you vendors as local as possible. So if you represent an American company that is attracted to the pricing models of a SEO company in India, you may want to consider the language barriers involved. Furthermore, because content and copywriting are integral aspects of on-site optimization, you will also want to assess the quality of the product that the company will provide.

Additionally, the manner in which your prospect communicates to the masses is huge reflection of how professional the company may be. Sometimes you can pick up cues simply by reading the copy on their website. Some other attributes that you may want to consider in regards to communication are:

Does the company involve itself in social media and other Internet marketing channels? Does the provider have a blog or publish articles that are relevant to its industry? How effective does the company write content, both for clients' sites and its own? Does the company deliver detailed monthly reports to its clients that show search rankings, site analytics, and performance metrics? Does the provider provide ongoing updates, insights, and new strategies?

If the company you are considering does have a Facebook or Google+ page, start reading into their posts. If they have a blog or articles section on their site, read into this content and assess the quality for yourself. It is usually obvious is the people of the company know what they are talking about, or if they're just full of fluff.

Effective communication is key for virtually any type of service agency. Get to you know your prospective optimizer as much as you can before making any commitments. If have any mixed emotions or adverse gut feelings about a certain company, it is most likely best that you cross them off your list of potentials.

Does Your Prospective Optimization Agency Offer Technical Expertise?

Almost anyone can write keyword infused page titles and meta descriptions and call themselves a SEO pro. However, the most powerful SEO specialists provide technical website services to pinpoint weaknesses and opportunities in the HTML back-end of your site. Whether the prospect has in-house web developers who know the in's and out's of search-friendly coding, or they simply outsource these capabilities, it is critical that your optimization firm acknowledges the importance of having a seamlessly coded website.

The overall coding structure of your website, whether it has been custom developed or is purely based on a content management system (CMS), must not go overlooked. There a tons of search agencies that fail to take into consideration the SEO pitfalls of using a robust CMS platform or cumbersome HTML coding. The end result of such negligence will often lead to a sluggish website that can inhibit search engine spiders from crawling and indexing the site in an efficient manner.

In short, the lack of awareness of how SEO-friendly your website's back-end is can end up being a recipe for disaster. Be sure to ask your prospect about the degree of technical expertise it offers. Does the company have experienced website developers on staff? Does the provider base all of its website services on a content management system?

When interviewing your SEO prospect, create a list of questions that address the technical capacity of the company. If they build their websites around CMS software, ask them what CMS platform they use. Additionally, do some research on just how SEO-friendly of the CMS platform really is (there's usually always reviews on this sort of thing.) Proficient and trustworthy SEO firms will have their goods together and will often times put all of their technical capabilities on the table. The task for you is to inquire and extract as many details as you can.

What Resources Does Your Prospect Use to Build Links?

After all of the changes from Google targeting the 'over-optimization' of websites that have too many optimized backlinks, the link building aspects of SEO are critical consideration. Many companies that offer SEO and web optimization are losing tread from their previous link building practices that no longer work. Not only has their clients' websites dropped in the search results, but so has their own sites.

Strong providers of search engine optimization have adapted to the recent search engine algorithm changes (primarily 'Penguin' which targeted over-optimized link building). These types of companies have modified the link popularity programs they provide to clients. Instead of creating tons of links with exact keyword phrase anchor text (which worked in the past), the leaders of SEO pack have diversified their link portfolios to include a blend of natural backlinks.

If you're seeking a company to provide SEO (and surely link building too,) below are some aspects that you may want to consider in choosing a sound, up-to-par specialist.

Does the provider use a mix of do-follow and no-follow backlinks? How well does the specialist use anchor text variations? That is, the ratio of your links anchor text that includes purely the URL (natural), partial use of keywords (semi-natural), or complete exact phrase match (not as natural, but still essential of SEO.) What types of sources does the company use to build links? Are they relevant content sources that pertain to the outbound links and their anchor text? How much authority do the link sources have to offer (often times measured by Google PageRank)?

When searching for the right SEO experts, be sure ask your prospects about their link building resources. The key points to uncover are just how natural and how relevant the link building service is. A very diverse blend of backlinks using various combinations of anchor text is natural. Building links from quality content that has some relation to the links is relevant. Using expansive blog networks, article spinning software, and mass publishing platform is unnatural and risky.

In addition, some SEO providers will still utilize traditional, old-school link building strategies like directory submissions, blog commenting, and forum posts. Although these sources of backlinks are much weaker for SEO than those from high authority blogs and articles, they still contribute to creating a very natural looking backlink portfolio for your website. When used in moderation (and not the sole sources for ranking power) these traditional linking techniques put the icing on the cake.

Why WordPress Is a Good Choice for Any Website

There are numerous factors to consider when choosing the right system for creating your website. Some website building tools are geared toward flexibility and functionality while others are created to be more user-friendly.

Better user-friendliness usually means sacrificing your website's flexibility and functionality. Under these circumstances you may feel forced to make a compromise between the two.

Content Management System

There doesn't always have to be a compromise between user-friendliness and functionality.

Some methods of building a website strive to bridge the gap between these two extremes. One of these powerful and user-friendly website building tools is WordPress.

Originally created for blogging, WordPress has evolved into a full-blown website building and management system capable of many other applications besides blogging. WordPress is an excellent choice for E-commerce websites, personal blogs, online communities and many other types of websites.

What makes WordPress such a good choice for building your website is that it's easy to use and has wide selection of theme choices. WordPress is also highly customizable with a vast multitude of WordPress plug-ins constantly being updated and developed.

Easy to Use

WordPress' administrative backend (aka the dashboard) couldn't get any easier. Every element of your website's content can be seen and accessed from the WordPress dashboard giving you total control of your WordPress website.

The WordPress dashboard is intuitive, the elements in the administrative panel are easy to identify, and the dashboard can be easily customized with dashboard widgets. Such a simple interface makes managing a WordPress website a complete no-brainer.

A World of Theme Choices

In a WordPress website, your overall layout and design are determined by your theme. WordPress themes come in many styles and designs. Some WordPress themes are free while others are offered at various prices.

WordPress themes range from simple layouts of mainly text to elaborate designs loaded with graphics.

There are hundreds of theme makers making thousands of themes for the WordPress Community and that number keeps on growing every day. Whatever you decide, you can rest assure there's a WordPress theme out there to fit your needs.

Highly Customizable

Each WordPress theme has its own unique features enabling different degrees of functionality within your WordPress website's layout. These features will vary based on which theme you have selected for your WordPress installation.

Unique features in WordPress themes aren't the only WordPress features that aid in the customization of your WordPress website.

WordPress also has extra components called plug-ins which enable you to add just about every type of functionality imaginable. In addition to adding extra capabilities, WordPress plug-ins allow your WordPress website to integrate with a host of both online and offline tools and services.

Whether you're looking to display a Google Map, integrate with Twitter or just improve your website's performance, chances are you can find a WordPress plug-in to fit your WordPress website's needs.

There are at least as many WordPress plug-in designers as there are theme designers. In fact, some of the designers who produce WordPress themes also produce WordPress plug-ins.

This seemingly inexhaustible supply of plug-ins gives you the power to turn your WordPress Installation into the website of your dreams.

With all of the things that are possible with WordPress, it's easy to see why WordPress would make such a great choice for your website's needs. Features such as its simple administrative interface in addition to the sheer volume of plug-ins and themes give WordPress an astronomical degree of flexibility without sacrificing user-friendliness.

Rather than simply compromising between functionality and user-friendliness, WordPress spans the entire spectrum to include as many elements of both as possible.

These are just a few of the things that make WordPress such a good choice for any website.

Build a Business Website in Two Days with WordPress

Many small businesses think they have to spend thousands of dollars and weeks of development time to have a functional website for their small business. But this is an outdated way to think about web design.

These days, there are a variety of content-management tools available to simplify website creation and management. WordPress is one of those tools. Yes, WordPress, the blogging system. Did you know you can also use WordPress as a full-featured website? It's true. You can create a highly functional, easy-to-manage website using only WordPress and a bit of technical know-how.

Content Management System

* And you can do it in a matter of days, instead of weeks.

* And your costs could range from to 0, instead of thousands.

A Business Website in Two Days

Not convinced? Need evidence? I understand. For the longest time, small businesses have been told that web development takes a long time and requires a lot of money. Thousands of web design firms make their bread and butter off this notion, and they are cursing me right now for writing this article.

But I'm a big fan of giving people options, so I want you to know that this web design option exists.

Here's a step-by-step approach I have used many times to create a business website from scratch, in only two days time.

Step 1 - Register Domain Name and Get Web Hosting

Using a company like GoDaddy, this can be done in about one hour. The domain registry costs per year, and the hosting costs about per year. Total cost for web domain and web hosting for one year = .

Step 2 - Install a MySQL Database on Web Host

This sounds complicated, but it's a five-minute operation on GoDaddy (one of many reasons I use them). I would go into the database section of the hosting control panel, select "create database," and then give it a name and password. Total time spent: 10 minutes.

Step 3 - Install WordPress on Web Host

WordPress is free, so there's no cost involved with this step. I would simply open a configuration file, insert the database name and password I created in the last step, and then upload the entire WordPress program onto the web host. Total time spent: 12 minutes (mostly waiting for files to upload).

Step 4 - Launch and Configure WordPress

When all the WordPress files are uploaded to the web host, I'm ready to run the installation process. This takes about 12 seconds, so we won't even count it on our time tally. I would then change the URL / linking structure to make it more search engine-friendly (1 minute), add some categories (2 minutes) and other minor tweaks (5 minutes). Total time spent: 8 minutes.

Step 5 - Customization and Appearance

I want this website to look professional and unique, so I would create a custom logo for it, arrange its layout for usability and readability, tweak the colors, etc. Granted, this step requires some graphical knowledge (for logo) and web coding skills (to arrange the site's layout), but it still only takes half a day. You could pay somebody to handle this setup process for just a few hundred dollars. Total time spent: 5 hours.

Step 6 - It's Time for Content

Now comes the most important part. I need to create some initial content for my website. I say "initial" because I plan to add new content on a weekly basis (the WordPress system makes this easy to do, by the way). I want to start with a few pages of content about my services, some content for the home page, etc. Total time spent: 1 day.

So let's recap. I've just created a multi-page business website (with a blog built in), I've created some initial content to get me started, and I have a content-management system that allows me to add new pages and blog posts as easily as I would type an email.

* Total time spent: 2 days

* Total cost for me: (because I did the work myself)

Like I said, if you don't have the technical / graphical skills to accomplish the things on this list, you could hire somebody to help you. In the end, you'll pay a lot less than you would pay for a traditional, programming-heavy ("bulky") website. And you'll have your website in a matter of days, instead of weeks or months. Best of all, you'll be able to manage certain aspects of it, because the content-management tool is built right in.

Some web design firms will tell you it can't be done, that it takes weeks to build a website. But I've just shown you it can, haven't I?

5 Must Haves for Your Website Development and Design

1. Engaging content: Online sales are majorly content centric. If your website text fails to strike a chord with your visitors, you are definitely not getting their business. Key messages and call-for-action words should be highlighted to catch instant attention. Check the home page and landing pages on your website. Do they make up for a quick easy read? If no, then its time for a content make over.

2. Right CMS technology: A fashion e Store requires different set of functionalities when compared with a real estate web portal. Based on these specific business requirements the CMS or content management system is chosen for website development. Right website development technology increases your sales potential. Say, you want to launch a new e Store. Choosing an open-source CMS for your website development will significantly cut down your launch to web time and you can start to make sales early. Further, you can integrate secured payment gateway and shipping modules as well. This will elevate the shopping experience on your e Store. Right web technology also helps web owners to manage their website's back-end smoothly.

Content Management System

3. Compelling visual hierarchy: Every element on a website is strategically placed to guide the eyes of the visitors towards a preferred goal. This is done so that the visitors form an intended perception of the website. Your website is an extension of your brand. An expert website development company knows it and can help you to make your website more interactive and engaging with HD graphics, nifty designing, videos and much more.

4. Seal of credibility: If you have won any awards or are accredited by a renowned authority, flaunt it. This will build a trust between you and your visitor. Remember, people do business with those whom they trust. Discuss with your website development company to have accolades on major landing pages or right next to your company's name on each page along with your home page url as link on that.

5. Conversion points: Perhaps, you are not able to tap into high sales because there aren't enough conversion points to turn visitors into sales. Here's a quick example. Say, you own a wedding planning company and most of your business comes from your website. You can increase conversion points with 'add to wish list' option, post quick inquiry, ask for free quotes feedback from visitor and so on to garner more leads which eventually can be converted into sales.

Why a Content Management System Is Important to Website Design

Do you want to be able to have a website design that allows you to alter the content of that site? Many people seriously underestimate how important a CMS can be to the functionality of their site. Here are a few of the reasons why a CMS is so critical to ensuring your website's success.

It Can Make Your Site More Affordable To Maintain
A good CMS can ensure that your site is as affordable as possible to maintain. This is because you will be able to do much of the maintenance yourself and leave only the most difficult tasks up to your web design company. Many website design and development companies will charge you a certain amount for ongoing site maintenance. The less they have to do for this, the lower the cost will be for you.

Content Management System

You Can Make Changes Very Quickly
If you are running a site where you are selling products, a CMS is important. This is because you may need to add, remove or change certain items. If you are waiting for the company that created your site to make changes to your products or other areas of the site you may find that you lose the chance to sell new items simply because your customers do not know about it. A delay can actually cause a new product to fail and this can be a costly problem for many people.

Even if you are not selling goods, it can still be worthwhile to have a CMS system built into your website. If you have a portfolio of work you will want to be able to alter the items that appear in that portfolio. You will be able to remove older items and replace them with newer work that better shows your evolving skills and abilities.

It Can Give You a Feeling of Control over Your own Site
Having a good CMS in place can really give you a feeling of control over your own site. Instead of simply handing it over to others to alter and maintain you can do this work yourself. This can make you feel as though you are in charge and are not relying on people who do not have the same dedication to your company to maintain your website.

You want to ensure that you understand completely how to use the CMS that is built into your site. The good news is that many of them can be learned in a few short lessons as they use controls that are familiar to many modern computer users.

Role of Content Management System in Website Development

Content Management System Software, otherwise known as Web publishing systems, is a computer application used to manage the workflow related to content publishing. Content Management System (CMS) is used for storing, controlling, versioning and publishing documents such as articles, technical manuals, sales guides and marketing brochures. The advantage of content management system in Web sites is that it helps manage the content of a Web site from a server than uploading it from local editors such as FrontPage and Dreamweaver. It allows you to work from a basic Web site design, so it is easy to add, edit and delete contents.

Content Management System consists of a huge database, file system and related software required to store and manage huge loads of data. In contrast to typical databases, CMS can index text, audio clips, video clips or images. The use of CMS simplifies the job of Web site developers. With this, it has become easier to publish contents online. They also allow non-technical authors and editors to contribute information to the Web site via graphical user interface (GUI).

Content Management System

CMS is a boon to large organizations that handle huge amount of data for collaborative purposes. With CMS, these organizations can make the data available to employees, customers and business partners across the world via different applications such as ecommerce systems or Customer relationship management (CRM) software. This allows companies to define workflow tasks for collaborative creation of contents. CMS can also track and manage multiple versions of a single instance of content. It separates the content's semantic layer from the layout and automatically set color, font or other features of the text so that publishers can add, modify or delete content without worrying about the basic layout.

DotNetNuke (DNN) is a popular form of content management system software available today. DotNetNuke is an open source framework written in VB.NET for the ASP.NET framework. DNN CMS is highly extensible and customizable through a set of skins and modules. Working with DotNetNuke CMS does not require any expert knowledge in ASP.NET. DotNetNuke CMS solutions are highly flexible. With the help of dozens of modules and skins available in DNN, Web site designers can create compelling applications such as blogs, e-commerce applications, photo galleries, email forms, site registration, RSS news feeds, and more.

Building a Database Website

It may seem that building a database website is something that you should be afraid of most especially if you do not have any previous experience with building whatever type of website. However, you will be surprised to know that it is not a very difficult task that you could even do it on your own by just depending on several guides available online.

As a matter of fact, there are even some benefits that you can get from building a database website of your own. The first benefit that you can get from a database website is that you will be able to store a huge amount of information about the services and/or products that you are selling people. And because of this, you will be able to experience a very efficient storing and retrieving system. Another thing that is beneficial when a person is making a website combined with a database is that you will be able to manipulate separately the contents of your website from its design and interface. In relation to this, the administrator will also have an easier time in updating the contents of the website since one will be able to do so without having to know anything about HTML. Because you will be able to update the contents of your site regularly, your visitors will always be assured that everything they will see in it are recent information about the products and/or services that you are offering them.

Content Management System

The requirements needed for you to be able to successfully run a database website are MySQL and PHP. First of all, MySQL is a relational database management system or RDBMS that will assist you in managing and organizing information a really large amount of information. And MySQL has the ability to make all these information available by using with it a language for scripting such as PHP. When this scripting language is already installed on your computer, your server will now be able to read a file called PHP script that will be responsible in retrieving in an instant all the information needed from the database. With these two tools working hand in hand with you, you will really be able to easily manipulate and control all the information that will be placed in your database. Of course, even if it is a database website, it is still a database website that is why you still need to find a company that will be a good choice to host your site. Make sure that you pick a hosting company that will be able to provide you with the things you need while building your website.

Knowing that these are the things you need in building a database website, you must feel more are ease now. Your confidence should also be higher now considering the fact that you can actually learn how to work using MySQL and PHP by reading some tutorials that are available online. This means that even though you do not have any experience with building a database website or whatever type of website for that matter, there is still a chance for you to be successful in managing your own website.

Your website should be attractive and artistically made. Horizontal scrolling is the most annoying factor during website viewing. For this your website content should be brief and right to the point. A professional website shouldn't have horizontal scrolling in any screen resolution. Long text can look dull and your visitors need to scroll down to read the whole text, which might annoy them. To avoid this, make your content short and simple. Be lucid while presenting the central information in your website.

Search Engine Optimization
If people can't find you, then they won't buy from you. So first, you need to submit your website in all possible major search engines to get qualified traffic. Every search engine reads the website through its crawlers and categorizes them as per the need of the searchers. Search engines work as per your keywords hence be careful while selecting right keywords. Your target audience will get your website only through keywords which they type in search engines.

Cross-browser compatible
Many websites have a disclaimer statement at the bottom of the page regarding the web browser on which the site has been designed. This message also shows that the page will be best viewed on that specific browser. This statement might annoy the visitor. Make sure that your site looks same in Mozilla, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari and all the other browsers, so you will not miss any of your audience. Along with this, you'll also want to make sure that the site looks equally as good in older versions of same browsers.

Let Your Website Flourish & Grow With WordPress

WordPress was originally released in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and was used as a blogging platform for many. It's popularity increased and since it has become an open source CMS (content management system) for websites.

WordPress offers many templates in its armour, designed by many of the world's most talented web designers. These can be used for free as part of the open source network of software.

Content Management System

So the question is, how will this work for you? It's simple because a web designer with PHP and MYSQL skills can turn WordPress into a completely bespoke content management system for you. That means that you can have the website looking the way you want with a fantastic back end system that allows you to control your content per page and also add things such as video, images and audio. Because WordPress is traditionally a blogging platform you can add articles/ blogs to your website easily and also optimise them for the search engines.

The real beauty of having a WordPress website is that it is very search engine friendly which helps your website to get found by many of the top search engines such as Google.

As with any open source software there are hundreds if not thousands of developers constantly building new applications for WordPress. You will find these easily in the back end of your website by searching through the plug-ins which are free to use. Here you will find just about anything you want such as a quick and simple contact form, a lightbox gallery to show off your pictures, a system to allow users to upload images to your site, eccomerce solutions so that you can sell easily online, SEO applications that allow you to simply optimise each page of your website and the list goes on.

The internet has matured and search engines and users love good content, a WordPress website allows you to manage your own content 100%, and remember that you can access your own secure login remotely from anywhere in the world because it is all internet based.

If you are looking to get a website built then be sure to ask your web designer about putting it onto WordPress software, you will be able to manage the website yourself for years to come and add plug-ins for new things you want to add such as video and podcasts. It really is that simple, just a couple of clicks of a button.

Note: WordPress is used by over 300 of the 10,000 biggest websites and this figure will only grow as people realise the potential it offers. It is also worth noting is that in late 2009 over 202 million websites were using its capabilities.
